Congrats on the new book! Yay! Given my day job, I see all kinds of good uses for ChatGPT - including as an occasional coach and brainstorm partner in writing. I'm glad you are playing with it.

My youngest kid uses it all the time for consolidating data and spreadsheets and so forth.

Wow, Suzy! I hate to say this, but look at all the agony ChatGPT takes out of book descriptions, key words, etc. I don't even like to say this, but there you are. Thanks!

Yeah, it's scary because I see how invasive it is ... but I also see that it can be useful for the admin stuff. Ugh.

Fantastic piece, Suzy!! I have not ChatGPT'd myself yet, but, I have been chatgpt'd by an alleged publicist who I figured out was bogus when the review of my book was too good to be true. I got three of the offers/reviews in one week by different people--allegedly. Writers beware.

I have, however, written a haiku on the subject:

I prefer not

to chat

with a bot

How antisocial of me!

Good summer, Suzy and all

AI is a bittersweet technology. Look how social media turned out.

Good luck with the book launch. I scooped up a pre-order. I love the set-up.

I tried it with Chatgpt and I am astounded. I’ll save it because it will be helpful when I need to come up with marketing text (not my strength). And while on principle I will write my own text, it’s a good starting point and has gotten me thinking.

I like the idea of "starting point"

My big worry is that reviewers will now not read the books, but pop in a quick prompt, download a file, and get the scoop--then paste that and collect their $.

Ugh yes. That could happen.

Suzy, I'm curious if you've given any thought/are aware of a Substack setting that allows you to opt your publication in or out of AI training (Dashboard > Settings > Privacy > Block AI training). If you're opted in, it's likely that our writing published on Substack is, in fact, scraped by AI chatbots for training - including this post. If you're opted out, there's a chance your publication is hurt in terms of visibility, i.e. won't surface in answer to user prompts. This may not be an issue if you're a well-known author, but depending on what you decide to prioritize, it may prevent discovery of lesser-known authors (like myself).

I posted a Substack note in this regard in hopes of sparking a conversation, but no one has engaged so far: https://substack.com/@enricancld/note/c-141489912. I think writers would be remiss to... dismiss AI altogether. It's something we absolutely have to reckon with, as your post implies, and this question is part of that reflection.

Thanks so much for the tip, Enrica! I just toggled that "no AI training" button.

I’ve been avoiding doing this myself, but I guess curiosity will get the best of me. Ugh.

Aaack. I am too long in the tooth to comprehend this kind of tech, but kudos to brave and intrepid you! THE BEQUEST is gonna be another fabulously awesome Suzy special. ChatGPT isn't wrong about your amazing thematic consistencies. XO
